An avalanche of snow-sport trends
Published November 10, 2006 at midnight
You've got your skis, your gloves, your helmet and your boots. But do you have a jacket with a built-in digital camera? The perfect aprés ski ensemble? Or snowboard pants that could double as the season's must-have skinny jeans?
Here's a look at some of the season's hottest snow-sport trends.
The aprés ski snow bunny (with deep pockets): Dolce & Gabbana's secondary line, D&G, focused on glamorous ski wear for its winter collection. Think white cashmere and wool sweaters with flirty pompons, fuzzy boots and fur-trimmed jackets.
The apres ski snow bunny (on a budget): Roxy offers cool chick looks at affordable prices. We're diggin' the "Kathlene" plaid bomber jacket ($84 at www.nordstrom.com) with a removable faux-fur-trimmed hood. And with all that money you're saving, pick up the brand's "Nikki" three-quarter sleeve hoodie ($49.50). You'll wear it all season.
The fashion-savvy snowboarder: Boring black, green or blue on the slopes? No way! A true fashionista is sure to stand out among the masses in bright and colorful Pucci-print jackets and vests from Rossignol (www.skisrossignol.com). And for those who like to go matchy-matchy, the company offers Pucci skis, as well ($550 at www.princetonoutdoor.com).
The hipster chick: Skinny jeans aren't just hot on the catwalks and shopping malls. Snowboard pants are also taking a departure from the baggy days of yore, with new slim-cut styles. Insulated pants from Betty Rides give you the functionality of snow pants, but fit like a great pair of jeans. And the 686 Smarty Lowrise 3-in-1 pants sit lower on the hips and come with a removable fleece liner in a fun print that can be worn solo or adjusted to capri length ($140 and $210, respectively, at www.rei.com).
The traditionalist: Puffy parkas never seem to go out of style. If your style leans toward the conventional, it's hard to go wrong with a great jacket from The North Face. We're adding the super-sleek "Destiny" down jacket to our ski wardrobe this season ($199 at www.backcountry.com). Black looks ultra chic, but it also comes in white, fuchsia and pale blue/green. Warm and stylish. Now, that's good fashion sense.
The techie: A day on the mountain won't keep you from taking a picture, listening to music or answering your phone. Snowboarders and skiers with a need for technology can be suitably attired with great gadgets. Burton's Ronin Espionage jacket comes with a built-in digital camera ($350 at www.shopping.msn.com). The R.E.D. Tantrum helmet allows you to pick up cell phone calls and listen to your MP3 player ($110 at www.store.burton.com). And a number of electronic beanies, including Bonfire's SkullCrusher, come with iPod shuffle pockets and built-in speakers ($80 at www.ems.com).
