Fuhrman on Schiavo a hard sell

Published July 8, 2005 at midnight

Terri Schiavo's remains are buried in a Florida cemetery, but her story apparently won't die any time soon.

The woman who was removed from life support in the wake of court rulings and controversy is the subject of a new book that purports to investigate "the unresolved question of why Terri collapsed in the first place." And the author is none other than the infamous Mark Fuhrman.

Fuhrman, you'll remember, is the detective whose reputation took a beating in the O.J. Simpson case. His new book, titled Silent Witness: The Untold Story of Terri Schiavo's Death, hit bookstores last week.

Fuhrman, author of other crime books, including Murder in Greenwich and Murder in Brentwood, has reportedly sifted through medical evidence, legal documents and police records, as well as interviewed Schiavo's friends, family members and caregivers to pen his book. Press material notes that it will reveal some ugly truths about Terri's relationship with her husband, Michael, and what happened the day she collapsed.

"Whatever happened to Terri Schiavo, she lived with it for fifteen years, a silent witness to the truth," Fuhrman writes. "Then, since she was unable to speak for herself, Michael Schiavo spoke for her. He said she wanted to die. Who will speak for Terri Schiavo now?"

No doubt Terri would have hoped the answer would be anyone but Fuhrman. When it comes to righting wrongs, the man's reputation is as questionable as that old bloody glove - a fact that could easily pull the plug on book sales before they ever come to life.
