Hike of the Week: Kelso Mountain, Bakerville
Published May 29, 2004 at midnight
Distance: 4.3 miles
Elevation gain: 1,934 feet (trailhead starts at 11,230 feet)
Difficulty: Moderate
Time: 2-3 hours
Getting there: Go west on Interstate 70 to the Bakerville exit (221). Go south for 3.4 miles to the trailhead. There is a steep, rough road to the trailhead that most cars make up.
Highlights: In late May and early June, snow blankets the descent route over steep tundra to the east of the summit.
Take an ice ax for a fun glissade to regain the trail.
Sharing the same trailhead as Grays and Torreys peaks, Kelso Mountain Trail often is a less-crowded journey than the famous fourteeners. Mountain goats often are seen on the hike, along with an old miner's cabin.
