FIELD TIPS

RUNNING RIGHT

Stride isn't the only important thing carrying you along on a run.

Just as important to effective running is head tilt.

How you hold your head is key to efficient running. Good overall posture is the aim.

Let your gaze guide you. Look ahead naturally, not down at your feet, and scan the horizon.

This will keep your neck and back in alignment.

Keep your chin tucked slightly toward your chest and relax your jaw and facial muscles.

GOTTA-GET GEAR

Mountainsmith Cross Country 5000

Cost: $160

Why you need it: Get an all-purpose internal frame pack for a bargain price. Even with a 60-plus-pound load of camera gear and water in Southern California's Joshua Tree National Park, the pack's rigid, no-skimp suspension - a framesheet and two aluminum stays, two-point hipbelt stabilizer straps and firm padding throughout - let our tester log long days with no soreness. Stability and small-load versatility are enhanced by six compression straps that bear-hug the packbag when the detachable daypack is off. Bummer: The fit grows less precise for the largest and smallest hikers.

Where to get it: 1-800-551-5889; www.mountainsmith.com
