Pronghorn fun facts

On the run: The pronghorn runs with its mouth open, not from exhaustion but to take in extra oxygen.
Adaptation: Pronghorn can survive a temperature range of 180 degrees, from 130 in the deserts to 50 below zero.
Get in line: In flight, pronghorns form a single-file line, with the dominant doe in the lead and the dominant buck protecting the rear. Good eyesight and speed are their best defenses.
Warning device: Pronghorn have scent glands near their tails that produce a strong-smelling liquid. In addition to flashing their rump patch when there is danger, they also spray their liquid scent, which can be detected up to a mile away.
Habitat: Of the 1 million pronghorn in existence today, the majority of herds are in Wyoming and Montana. Wyoming claims that almost 75 percent of the animals in the state live within a 150-mile radius of Casper.
Horns: Male pronghorns have horns about 12-18 inches long with a prong. Only about 40 percent of the females have horns, and they don't get longer than their ears and never fork.
