No bull, it's springtime
Published May 1, 2004 at midnight
A young bull elk takes a break in the tall grass along the banks of the Yellowstone River in northwest Wyoming. The elk's antlers are in the velvet stage in the spring and summer. Spring is an excellent time to photograph the elk. There is the contrast of the velvet antlers, the newness of the babies, which are born between May and early July, and the overall energy the new season brings.
Making the picture
The challenge: Whenever I am photographing large mammals, safety is a major concern. Not only my safety but also the safety of the animals.
The solution: The right equipment, which allows me to photograph at a distance, is important. This distance allows the animals to stay comfortable while I stay out of their space.
The gear: Canon EOS 1n and 300mm f/4.0, Fujichrome slide film and a Manfrotto tripod.
